The Importance of Gods in Ancient Culture
What does a culture’s deities say about that culture?
Edith Hamilton once wrote that the gods were often more mischievous or destructive than the people the judged.
Geraldine Pinch said that the gods and goddess of ancient times represented the extremes of values, morals, heroism, justice and injustice among the people.
Through reading ancient Myth we see that the antics of the gods are as much a mirror of political satyr as they are religious text. It is also often the case that the symbols for the gods make up a majority of an ancient culture’s alphabet. Is it safe to say that a culture’s gods mirror a culture?
While Ms. Hamilton pointed out that deities are often to extreme to be a true look into the day-to-day lives of ancient people it is also true that if one can ‘dumb down’ a myth enough one can find a day-to-day ‘moral of the story’.
Such an example of this statement can be found in Kevin Crossley-Holand’s book “Myth’s of the Norsemen”
In his some what less dramatic retelling of a short Scandinavian myth in which the god of justice and thunder, Thor’s daughter is given away in marriage to a dwarf by her grandfather* Odin. Despite her mother and father’s wishes Thudra (the daughter) leaves with her husband-to-be because of his promises of riches. Before the wedding the future son-in-law dwarf returns to the former home of his bride. Here he engages Thor in a heated conversation. By the end of the myth Thor allows the dwarf to gloat until sunrise, when the creature is turned to stone by the sun’s golden rays.
While this story is almost four pages of Thor taking verbal abuse it can be summed up into one short moral of the story; “father knows best’.
While I do not have the time or space here to write down the many instances where this point is proven, it can quite simply be but that often enough the reason gods and goddess of old are more destructive or mischievous than their governed peoples is because they are a depiction of the moral extremities of said ancient cultures.

* Odin being the father of Thor is an argued point between archeologist and anthropologist. It is mentioned several times that Thor is the son of Odin, but just as many times it is stated that he is not.

Chapter One
Coruscant, 22BBY
Boss stretched for the one thousandth time since they'd been taken out of cold storage. He wanted a hot shower and a good meal, but the best he got was a chemical spray down and a ration bar, washed down with a nutrient injection. Yummy. The nurse attending them today was one with which Scorch had become far to personal with, at least for Boss' liking. The red headed Cyllest Vinn wasn't all that hard to look at, she was far to pale though for Boss liking and she knew that she was beautiful too. Boss recalled Bensay Wennen, she also had known she was beautiful, but only because the face was made blatant by the way people stared and often avoided her. Boss yawned, well, they'd woken his squad up for a reason, and it wasn't to ponder on women. The clone watched as his brothers, Sev and Fixer were donning their armor, Scorch was being slow to put his on, showing off his muscly black clad body to the Nurse.
"Alright, suit up and let's get moving, I'm sure Zey's got a shiny new mission for us." Boss announced, to get Scorch in gear.
"Are you sure Boss? Maybe he just wanted us woken up so he could pass out a few creds and let us have a night on the town." Scorch replied.
Sev looked as if he wanted to retort but held back, Fixer kept his quiet front and donned his helmet.
Once the group was suited up they were ushered to the barracks where they sat waiting for Jedi Master Arlign Zey to make his rounds. It didn't take long for the master to make his way to them. He entered the room with his usual air of high and mighty other worldly power he sat down at the table with them and gave each a small, rare, micro smile. "I trust we're all doing well?"
"Well as can be expected General." Boss spoke for the group.
"Good, then we can get straight to business." The grey haired Jedi, a middle aged human by all accounts other than his connection with the 'all knowing, all binding force'. "The republic has been on several good will missions for the mid-rim planet of Antarus, a small planet plagued with sickness. Their atmosphere was breached by a trade ship long ago, and let off a small amount of radiation causing the air to become smog like." Zey, meshed his fingers together on the metal table as he spoke. "While the republic has had to cut back on their missions there due to the war we've heard from sources on that planet that Separatist ships landed on one of Antarus' six moons. They believe it was Kik-ik Four."
"And you were short on Recon troops to sort this out?" Boss asked.
"Actually, we sent two ARC troopers to find out if these rumors were true. Unfortunately we lost contact with the second one Seventy-two hours ago. " Zey replied.
"And the first?" Fixer spoke up. Zey seemed a little shocked, obviously he'd never heard Delta's second in command speak.
"Regretfully, he was lost over two standard weeks ago."

Kik-ik IV, 35 BBY
The night air was thick with fog and humidity. The trees sagged beneath the the weight of the air and it looked as if the glowing insects of night were trapped in the fog and struggling to break free so as they could fly again. Despite this heat and humidity, despite the rain that had opened up the sky and flooded the marshland, and despite the urging of his wife to postpone this night of feasting and enjoyment, Chieftain Iieer mixed wine and shared meals with his council and Priests. They celebrated their victory against the land faring inhabitants of Kik-ik, those foul scavengers. The Iroadu covered in their dirty grey fur, padded feet and golden eyes. Tonight should have gone perfectly. But it didn't. Instead of feasting until gorged and going to bed very drunk to lay beside his lovely Queen he sat staring into the fog, wanting to still the noise of the night. His wife, Queen Vev-ey-ek was dead.

Favorite thing about being sick?

  • Mar. 31st, 2008 at 3:39 PM

Did any one else see the 'What's your Favorite thing about being sick?' question on the writers block thing? We'll I'm answering it right now. NOTHING! I like nothing about being sick. Because I'm home schooled, I still have to do school, and then I have to stay in bed with no form of entertainment for several days. BOOO sickness.

.... Wow. What lame post after being inactive for a few days. ^^;

Working? Me?

  • Mar. 24th, 2008 at 11:21 PM

Yeah, Today I've been doing some work for a book I've been writing for four years. Gah, I'm really nervous about publishing it, I think J.K. Rowling said it best when she talked about Harry being there for her through a lot of tough times, and being scared people would understand Harry like she did. I really hope Anya has some one out there who likes her other than me. I really don't care if I have Rowlings sucess, as Long as I have some one who will read and enjoy my book.
But today I haven't written, I just worked on the species Back Celebrations and Culture. I want everything to be as believable as possible, while still remaining whimsical. I hope I finish it some time this year... or next. ^^;

Happy Easter!

  • Mar. 23rd, 2008 at 11:34 PM

Happy Easter! Even though there is only 30 minutes left of it! YAY! Today the pope baptized a radical islamic dude.... I wonder if he got saved. ^^ I hope so. That would be a nice thing for easter.
Well Sorry to take up your time.

I AM THE WINNER!

  • Mar. 22nd, 2008 at 5:24 PM

Actually, I win nothing. ^^; But I merely broke out of my shell for a little today. We were at the mall looking around, and Dais and I went off on our own while J went to look for some clothes. So we went around from store to store like we usually do and finally we made the rounds at the mall, and decided to try going towards the Nodstrom side of the mall again, well on the way there I saw the one of the hottest guys I've ever seen! After much promting from Dais I tracked him down and got a picture with him. He was from Korea, and had a friend with him. I asked them how to say hello in Korean. "Aniyo." And they wanted to borrow my ID for cigarettes, I was two weeks shy of helping them out. lol But any way it was very fun, and they laughed when I asked, and posed with me. It was nice to break out of my shell for a little bit, you only live once, and if you can't tell your kids at least one story that they reply "Were you high!?" too then life's not worth living. ^^
